Comic Attack 39

In case my drawings are too crude (which they probably are), the elevator's door had opened halfway between floors and we were totally stuck. This was in my building, and my landlord's phone was turned off. I didn't know who to call (I couldn't remember the number for the Ghostbusters) so I called the cops and they sent down an officer with an amazing moustache-and-flat-top combo (double threat) who woke up my superintendent who fixed the elevator and lowered us safely to the lobby of the apartment building.

The cop said we were the second call he got that night for people stuck in elevators in Brooklyn. This apparently happens a lot, so next time I plan to use an elevator I'll remember this one important thing: bring my DS.

Thanks to Vasilis for sharing the adventure. We might be the calmest people to ever get stuck in an elevator.

Pixu: The Mark of Evil

PIXU: THE MARK OF EVIL

Written and art by Gabriel Ba, Becky Cloonan, Vasilis Lolos and Fabio Moon.

This gripping tale of urban horror follows the lives of five lonely tenants -- strangers -- whose lives become intertwined when they discover a dark mark scrawled on the walls of their building. The horror sprouts quite innocently from a small seed and finds life as something otherworldly, damaged, full of love, hate, fear, and power. As the walls come alive, everyone is slowly driven mad -- defenseless against the evil in the building, stripped of free will, leaving only confusion, chaos, and eventual death.

Originally self-published as a two-volume book, this groundbreaking work receives a deluxe presentation in a hardcover edition with a sketchbook section from Dark Horse this summer.

128 pages, black and white, $17.95, in stores on July 15. Hell yeah.

(And for those of you who can't wait- and want to support our self-publishing endeavors hehe- you can still pick up the single issues over at Khepri.com!)

New Shit! Exclusive!

So! This weekend was full of surprises. As you might have noticed, there is no Comic Attack this week- I took it off because 1. I'm swamped for work and 2. I didn't get to do it since I was at the con the whole weekend!! Comic Attack will go back to it's regularly scheduled program next Monday.

So you're probably all wondering: here's the news.

BUFFY!!
I'm writing an issue of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Tales of the Vampires, with Vasilis Lolos illustrating it. This is my first time writing a script for someone else, so I'm pretty excited. Here's a link to a CBR interview with me about it. Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba are doing an alternate cover to it (Jo Chen (!!!!!!!!) is doing the main cover) so it's kinda like a Pixu reunion tour!

Speaking of PIXU.....
Pixu v.II is still up for sale on Khepri, but we have some good news for the summer: Dark Horse is printing a hardcover collection of both volumes for San Diego Comic Con in July!

Very exciting. I talk a little on that CBR interview about this as well.

So all this is cool. I'm working on new Demo issues as well, hopefully I'll be able to show some of that soon, right now I'm just bottling all of my excitement about it up :D

And a lot of you are probably wondering, "Oh, Becky! When O when is East Coast Rising v2 coming out?" and to that I can only say I don't know. I have kept quiet since they decided not to print it last year, but I'm very close to finishing it; about 30 pages away from completion, I'm just waiting on the "go" from TP. Every time I think we get close to making a deal, something happens that makes it seem like it won't go through, so right now I'm just waiting. Hopefully I'll have some good news about it soon, but in the meantime I'm treating it like a pet project that one day I might see printed...

I've got 120 pages finished just waiting for print; I was working on this volume at the same time as American Virgin, but then my editor was moved off the project about a year ago and it was put on hold. It's not like I haven't been doing anything though, I've got other stuff going on (a pretty full plate I might add), so please just be patient with it :3 as I have had to be! I get a lot of people asking if I'll ever finish the second volume, so I just wanted to put this out there. I'm almost done, it's not like I haven't been working on it. I just realize I haven't said much on the subject, so people might have thought that I have forgotten about it, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. I think about this comic daily: my thumbnails are tacked on my wall and I have pages from it sitting on my desk for scanning and organizing. So sorry if I've been quiet about this subject, but I'm just not one to take my problems to the Internet. I try not to bitch too much online, that's not like my style, u know??!! Anyway, comics are awesome, and I'm really proud of ECR2, I just hope you guys can all read it soon!!!!! In conclusion: When I know what is happening, be sure that YOU will know what is happening!!!

Also, a new Nebuli is in the works with Vasilis Lolos, and also a new web comic with Hwan Cho. More on these later. I love being busy. I love being busy with LOTS AND LOTS OF COMICS!

Let Us Go This Evening For Pleasure...

Thanks to everybody who came out to the Society of Illustrators tonight! I'd like to thank in particular Nathan Fox who is awesome, and who I need to keep in touch with, and Fernanda Cohen for putting this thing together. And the Society (I love that word) for having us! I was all talked out by the end, I think I don't talk enough, so when I have to talk for a few hours I get all worn out and tired. Anyway, hope I was interesting.

There was a video made, which will be on the Society of Illustrators website maybe in a few weeks (?) so I'll link to that for anyone who missed it and wanted to go. :3

Society of Illustrators: Becky Cloonan and Nathan Fox on Comics

Becky Cloonan and Nathan Fox on Comics
Tuesday, February 10, 2009, 6:30-8:30 pm

Cloonan and Fox will discuss the secret behind creating successful comic stories, how to break into the field, what it is like to have a loyal following, how to make a successful cover, what it takes to draw a billion lines per panel, and how super heroes stay fit without ever going to the gym. The lecture will also focus on the connection between illustration and comics, and drawing as the basis of two fields that attract very different audiences though they share a common language.

The lecture will be followed by book signings by both artists.

New York Comic Con

So there are some announcements which will happen that I'm pretty excited about, and yeah, of course I'll wandering around for all 3 days. However, I don't have a table and I'm not signing anywhere (taking this year "off" so to speak) but I am on a panel on Sunday: Sunday, 1:30pm, Panel Room 6 (1A18): Comics and the Language of Visual Symbolism.

So that's that!
