King Con, it totally happened!!

King Con totally happened this past weekend at the Brooklyn Lyceum, a strange but conveniently located building on Fourth Avenue in Brooklyn. So I'll admit I had doubts about this convention, it seemed from where I sat to be pretty disorganized and a little last minute, but the con went off without many hitches, definitely a success for a first year con. The programming was good (if also a little cold) and the setup of the floor was organized (if also a little cramped).

The Lyceum itself was a little "under construction", but a lot of it seemed cosmetic, where the building is fully functional, it just looks a little ghetto. Nothing wrong if you don't mind cement floors in the bathroom, and press board floors under your table. The lighting was also pretty bad. It has a good location though, and it's close to a few good restaurants and bars. They didn't have heat in the upper level where the panels were being held, so while on the Graphic NYC panel I was mostly freezing. If this con was held any earlier, we would have been baking in the basement like we did at MoCCA (the circulation wasn't that great, and sometimes the floor felt a little stuffy), and any later and we would have froze on our panels- so the timing was just right for this convention too.

The signings that the con set up were also a little weird, they were held either behind the panel area, or in a small loft space above the convention floor. It didn't seem like anybody cared to get anything signed, or even knew that they were going on.

As far as table space goes, I didn't think I would be attending but at the last minute decided to bring a few books and put them on a friend's table- they had 8' and 6' tables, for reasonable prices I think but personally I didn't sell much (granted, I didn't have much to sell) but our table was in the back, under the before-mentioned loft space, so it was pretty dark. We didn't get that much traffic either, or a way to get in or out of the table- we had to go under it, or climb over the side. Which is fun I guess, but let's face it- we're all a little too old to be climbing under tables.

Anyway- all in all this con was a success! It was pretty ambitious for a first con, but it ran smoothly and the people who put it together definitely had a vision for it. I had fun just walking around, and I'd definitely go back again, although I'm not sure I'd get a table. The Lyceum is a good space, even if it's in need of a facelift, it was in a great location. It had a feeling like MoCCA did when it had just started- small, intimate, and a lot of familiar faces.

It was great seeing everyone again!

Wednesday I'm off to Japan and then Thailand again- will blog more about that tomorrow. In the meantime Comic Attack is on hold while I travel- will pick back up again when I get back in December! :D

KING CON! This weekend! In Brooklyn!

Hey everyone! I'll be attending KING CON this weekend in Brooklyn- I didn't think that I'd originally be around for this convention, and I was kinda bummed, it being Brooklyn's first comic convention and all- but as fate would have it, I am spending a few weeks back in NY between my trips to Brazil and Japan so WOOO! I'll be going to this on Saturday. Here's where you can find me!

PANEL: GRAPHIC NYC: SATURDAY 3PM-3:50PM
GRAPHIC NYC's own Christopher Irving and Seth Kushner host a chat with four celebrated New York City cartoonists: Peter Kuper (Spy vs Spy), Becky Cloonan (Demo), Christine Norrie (Cheat), and George O'Connor (Ball Peen Hammer), to discuss what makes NYC the nexus for comics.
SIGNING: SATURDAY 5-6PM
I have a signing with Melissa DeJesus and Hwan Cho at Mel's table- we don't have a floor map yet, and I'm not sure if they are giving one out before the con (if they do I'll post it), but the table is under Melissa DeJesus so look for that. I'll probably be hanging out at her table throughout the day, but this is a good chance to catch the three of us together!

I'm pretty psyched for this- although I won't be going on Sunday (too much work to do!) It should be a pretty good time. I hope they do this again next year.

Comic Attack 66

Comic Attack was on hold for a bit while I was in Brazil, but now it's back- picking up where we left off- in the Ice Age. Coincidentally, this comic is a great segue into November.

I've been obsessing over modernism and patterns lately.

Pão de Queijo

So Brazil has been wonderful to me, so many thanks to Fabio and Gabriel, and everyone else here, Raquel, Grampa, Kako, Bruno, Perca, Gustavo, Rafa, I'm sure I'm forgetting people but I'm super tired tonight. I'll write more later. Today we walked around Sao Paulo, went to a few galleries and had an easy lunch. I bought some crap for friends back home, and we spent the evening at the orchestra and saw Café de los Maestros, which was fucking mind blowing.

I've been working a lot while in Brazil, so I guess I didn't get out as much as I could have, but drawing comics with friends is so fun I can't ask for more than that. This morning I took a break from penciling to do a little sketch on the computer, which i made into a pattern:

I go back to Brooklyn on Monday night- as much as I'm going to miss my friends and Brazil, I am looking forward to sleeping in my own bed, and also being able to speak english and have almost everybody understand me, heh! I've picked up a bit of portuguese along the way, so next FIQ (yeah, I'm coming back in 2 years!) I'll have more of a vocabulary arsenal.

I'm pretty tired tonight, so I'm going to bed soon, but I'm very inspired and all I can think about is getting up in the morning and drawing.
